JOANNA SWOPE SCHENK RUSSELL
(6/2/1934 - 3/1/2004)




Joanna Swope Schenk Russell, 69, of Lakewood, CO, formerly of Memphis, MO, passed away March 1, 2004, at the Hospice of St. John in Lakewood, CO, after a prolonged illness.

Joanna was born June 2, 1934, in Scotland County, MO, the daughter of Paul and Ruby Sturgeon Schenk.

Joanna completed high school in Memphis, MO, and wed Max Patterson in 1953. They returned to Scotland County in 1964 from Sanger, CA. In 1968 after her husbandís death she relocated with her children to Columbia, MO, where she achieved her license in Practical Nursing.

In 1993 Joanna returned to Scotland County, after the death of her second husband in Denver, CO. She was active in the community, volunteering at the Senior Center and frequently visiting with friends and neighbors. She was also a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Memphis, MO.

In declining health Joanna moved to Lakewood, CO in 2002 to live with her daughter, after the death of her third husband. The letters and cards from her friends were always uplifting and much appreciated by Joanna and her family.

Joanna was preceded in death by her three husbands, Max Patterson of Memphis, MO, Donald Turner of Denver, CO, and Don Russell of Burlington, IA.

She is survived by her two children, Phillip Patterson of Park Hills, MO and Caroline Morrison and husband, Roy of Lakewood, CO; her parents, Paul and Ruby Schenk of Memphis, MO; two sisters, Mary Schenk of San Francisco, CA, Esther Webber of East Peoria, IL; and one brother, John Schenk and wife, Laura of Memphis, MO; three grandchildren, Caroline Patterson, Jesika and Jordan Morrison, as well as nephews and nieces, Curtis Webber and wife, Laurie of Greenwood, IN, Alison and Joshua Schenk of Memphis, MO; also many nieces and nephews from the respective marriages.

The family has suggested memorials to the National Breast Cancer Foundation or to The First Presbyterian Church of Memphis, MO and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555. Memorial services and inurnment will be held at a later date. Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO is handling local arrangements.
