REX E. THOMMEN
(7/1/1919 - 3/11/2004)



Rex E. Thommen, 84, of Mt. Sterling, IA, died March 11, 2004, at home.

He was born July 1, 1919, at Moravia, IA, to Pearl F. and Isabelle Tracey Thommen.

He married Esther A. Taylor, December 10, 1938, at Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death July 30, 2001.

He grew up in Bible Grove, MO, lived in Clinton and Cantril, IA, farmed in Scotland County, MO, and retired to Mt. Sterling, IA. As a young man he and his father owned and operated a riverboat on the Mississippi River. They later owned and operated a grocery store-locker plant and a hardware-implement store, both in Cantril, IA. He had been a city council member in Cantril and Mt. Sterling, IA, had been fire chief in Cantril, IA, and was a long-time trustee of Harness Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, IA.

Surviving are a son, Donald Thommen of Vancouver, WA; two daughters, Shirley Farrell of Carman, IL and Linda Corman of Mt. Sterling, IA; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clyde Thommen of Salem, OR, Chester Thommen in Oregon, Russell Thommen of Dallas, OR, and Max Thommen of Louisville, KY; and a sister, Delores Godwin of Lakehurst, NJ. He was preceded in death by twin daughters, Connie and Bonnie Thommen in infancy.

Funeral services were held March 15, 2004, at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, IA, with Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial was in the Harness Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, IA. Memorials to Harness Cemetery or City of Mt. Sterling, IA for street signs may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 303 Third St., Mt. Sterling, IA.
