SYLVIA MARIE GILMER
(11/17/1909 to 4/21/2004)



Sylvia Marie Gilmer, 94, of the Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton, MO, passed away April 21, 2004, at the home. She was formerly of Rutledge, MO.

The daughter of John Franklin and Jennie (Stehl) Bowen, was born November 17, 1909, in Kahoka, MO. She grew up in Kahoka and finished high school. She was baptized and was a member of the Christian Church in Kahoka, MO.

On June 17, 1929, she was married to Floyd C. Swearingen. To this union one son, Robert Gene, was born in 1942. Around 1940, Sylvia and Floyd moved from Kahoka, MO to Sandhill, near Rutledge, MO, where she lived until Floyd passed away in 1968.

She married Charlie R. Gilmer on November 29, 1971. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1972.

She was also preceded in death by her mother in 1928; her father in 1956; one brother, Alfred Bowen, who died in infancy; and one brother, Henry Bowen, who died on December 30, 1994.

Survivors include her son, Robert Gene Swearingen and his wife, Loma of LaGrange, MO; a step-daughter, Wanda Mae Gilmer Johnson and her husband, Wayne of Burlington, WA; two grandchildren, Pamela (Swearingen) Campbell and her husband, Bobbie Joe of Olney, IL, and Matthew Swearingen of LaGrange, MO; one great-granddaughter, Nikki Lynn Campbell; two step-great-grandchildren, Chris and Cody Campbell; and several nieces, nephews, and a great-nephew.

Funeral services were held on April 24, 2004, in the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, with the Reverend Charles Hammack officiating. Serving as pallbearers were John Cole, Stan Burke, Will Boone, Dick Robertson, Matt Swearingen, and Bobbie Joe Campbell. Interment was in Sandhill Cemetery, Rutledge, MO. Memorials have been suggested to Sandhill Cemetery or to OATS Bus, Inc. and may be left at or mailed to Gerth Funeral Service, Inc., 115 S. Main, Memphis, MO 63555. Arrangements were handled by Gerth Funeral Service from their Memphis Chapel.
