LEWIS NELSON BENNETT

Lewis Nelson Bennett, 78, of Downing, MO, passed away July 11, 2004, in Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.

Lewis was born September 22, 1925, in Clay, MO, the son of Robert and Minnie Cole Bennett.

He graduated from Bible Grove School, and served in World War II from 1944 to 1946 in the 168th Infantry.

On June 24, 1954, he married Mary Lucille Fogle in Memphis, MO.

Lewis worked as a mechanic in Memphis, MO for over 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in his garden. After retirement he enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Downing, MO; two daughters, Shirley Thyson and her husband, Chris of Novelty, MO; Becky Whiteaker and her husband, Robert of LaBelle, MO; a brother, Lloyd Bennett and his wife, Estelene of Vermont, IL; three grandchildren, Amy Whiteaker of LaBelle, MO, Brian Ethridge of Kirksville, MO, and Chanel Thyson of Novelty, MO; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Whiteaker and Cassidy Miller of LaBelle, MO; a sister-in-law, Virginia Winn of Keokuk, IA; three brothers-in-law, Wallace Fogle of Downing, MO, William and Gary Stice of Keokuk, IA; several nieces and nephews.

Memorials have been suggested to the family, and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Graveside services were held July 14, 2004, at the Greensburg Cemetery, Greensburg, MO, with Rev. Charles Hammack officiating. Pallbearers were Chris Thyson, Robert Whiteaker, Ernest Bennett, Ivan Bennett, John Shaffer, and Jerry Hocker. Honorary bearer was Brian Ethridge, Arrangements were under the direction of Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
