Lawrence Ward, 80, of rural Memphis, MO, passed away on August 11, 2004, at his home of Sclerosing Cholangitis.
Lawrence was born on December 10, 1923, at Marengo, IA, the son of Floyd Raymond and Myrtle DeWald Ward.
He attended grade school and high school in Malcom, IA, after high school, he joined the U.S. Navy.
He married Bonnie Tinkle on July 9, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA, and to this union six sons were born.
Lawrence, Bonnie, son David, along with parents F.R. and Myrtle Ward moved to the Lawnridge, MO area in 1950. Together they raised hogs, cattle, sheep, chickens, row-crops, and six boys. They moved twice in the Memphis area residing at the Crawford residence for the past 45 years. Lawrence was a jack of all trades Ė mechanic, heavy equipment operator, wood worker, candy maker, RVíer and community leader. He was past president of the Methodist Church Menís organization and State Director of Good Samís Club 1991-94. His family and friends have spent many fun/enjoyable times around the bonfire and hosting family reunions. Lawrence was always glad to see you and got great enjoyment from teasing his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many, many friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David; one daughter-in-law, Susan; two sisters; and four brothers-in-law.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie of 55 years; five sons, Jim and wife, Laurie, Chuck, Ray and wife, Connie, Randy and wife, Debbie, all of Memphis, MO, Raun and wife, Pam of Landrum, SC; one daughter-in-law, Kathie Ward of El Cajon, CA; two sisters, Alberta Mason, Cedarburg, WI, and LaVan Ketels of Montezuma, IA; 15 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The family has suggested memorials to the Hospice 2000 and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Funeral services were held August 14, 2004, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Pastor Terry Lippstreu officiating. Musicians were Joe and Lori Fulk. Pallbearers were Kelly Ward, Denny Ward, Corry Ward, Brian Ward, Cody Ward, David Joe Ward and Gerald Kaldenberg. Honorary bearers were Good Sam Club. Military graveside services by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post #4958, Memphis, MO. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery.
