FRANCIS G. BALLEW
(5/24/1922 – 9/19/2004)



Francis G. Ballew, 82, of Wyaconda, MO, died September 19, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk, IA.

He was born the son of Ernie Francis and Leah (Rominger) Ballew on May 24, 1922, in Davis County, IA.

Francis graduated from Wyaconda High School, Wyaconda, MO.

He married the former Lelia C. Speer on July 24, 1943, in Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death on July 15, 2001.

Francis served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a member and a deacon of the Arbela Baptist Church.

One of Francis’ true loves was baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals. He and his brother, Tom, both tried out for the ball club and spent some time in the organization.

Francis was a hard worker. He was employed as a trucker, hauling livestock, coal, and fertilizer. Francis also farmed and worked for Burley Grimes as a plumber. In his free time he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lelia; parents; brothers, Thomas and Archie; and sisters, Rhoda and Elizabeth, who died in infancy.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Speer of Kahoka, MO; sisters-in-law, Faylene Murphy of LaBelle, MO, Betty Bourgeois of Wyaconda, MO, Edna Speer of Moberly, MO, and Verna McCollum of Maywood, MO; brother-in-law, Kenneth Hayes of Texas; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services were held September 22, 2004, at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Wyaconda, MO with Rev. Ernest Deatrick and Bob Moseley officiating. Sheila Moseley provided music. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery, south of Wyaconda, MO. Memorials were suggested to the Arbela Baptist Church, Arbela, MO, and may be mailed to or left at Gerth Funeral Service, 115 North Main, Wyaconda, MO 63474. Condolences may be sent to Mr. Ballew’s family at gerths@gerths.com. Arrangements were handled by Gerth Funeral Service from their Wyaconda chapel.
