SCR-I Varsity Hoops Teams Get Back Into Action Next Week

After a nearly three-week layoff over the Christmas holiday the Scotland County varsity basketball teams will jump back into action January 5th and 6th in the first round of the 32nd Annual Highland Basketball Tournament.

It will be a tournament of rematches for the Lady Tigers, at least until they make it to a trophy game.

SCR-I, which is seeded fifth in the bracket, will take on Hannibal in a first round tilt scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 5. The Lady Tigers lost to Hannibal in overtime in an early season match up and Coach Kelli Swearingen said her girls are looking forward to a rematch.

Scotland County is at the top of the bracket along with #1 seed Clark County, which takes on Knox County (#8) in the first game Monday.

So regardless of the outcome of game one, Scotland County will get another rematch in round two taking on either the Lady Indians or the Lady Eagles on Wednesday night. A victory sends SCR-I on to play at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 7. A loss would set up a 5:00 p.m. game Wednesday night on the consolation side of the bracket.

The bottom of the bracket features Palmyra (#2) taking on Highland #7. Warsaw (#3) will battle Canton (#6).

The consolation trophy game is scheduled for Friday, January 9 at 4:30 p.m. The girls third place game will also be played that evening at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, January 10 at 6:00 p.m.

For the boys to go very far in the tournament it will require the team to beat some new opponents. SCR-I, the sixth seed, will take on Palmyra (#3) in a first round game set to tip off at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 6.

The Tigers are bracketed with #2 Hannibal which will take on Knox County (#7) in the late game Tuesday night. Scotland County will be in action Thursday January 8 for a second round game. A win means the Tigers play at 7:30 p.m. while a loss pushes the game time back to 9:00 p.m.

Canton, the tourney’s top seed, sets atop the bracket with a bye in round one. The Wildcats will take on the winner of the Highland (#4) and Clark County (#5) game.

The boys consolation game will be played at 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 9. The third place game is set for 9:00 p.m. that night. The boys title tilt will be played Saturday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m.
