Lynch Claims $1,000 Prize at Night Two of Sunoco Stock Car Shootout

by Brian Neal

Memphis, MO (August 11) The first annual Sunoco Stock Car Shootout came to an end on Wednesday at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway. Jim Lynch (USRA Stock Cars), Tony Becerra (USRA Hobby Stocks) and Tyler Schulte (Hornets) came away winners.

Brian Mitrisin took advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 of the 25 lap USRA Stock Car feature. Mitrisin was pulling away from the rest of the field, when a late caution came out and brought the field back to him.

Mitrisin would take the lead on the restart, with Jim Lynch, who started 8th, challenging him for the top spot. Lynch would jump to the outside of Mitrisin on lap 22 to take over the lead. He then held on for the final 3 laps to pick up the win and the $1,000 top prize. Lynch also won a guaranteed spot in the $10,000 to win Stock Car special at Oskaloosa on August 23-25.

Mitrisin held on to finish in 2nd, Josh Newell was 3rd, Jim Brown was 4th, with Ryan Cook coming from 9th to round out the top 5. Troy Alexander, TJ Criss, Mitrisin and Mike Spilman picked up heat race wins, while Brad Pinkerton won the semi.

The 15 lap USRA Hobby Stock feature saw Jeremy Hamlin edge Doug Small by inches to take the lead on lap 1. Hamlin looked to be in control for the win, until lap 12 when he pulled out with mechanical problems. Tony Becerra inherited the lead and then held off Mike Shelton, who started 8th, to pick up the win and the $700 check.

Becerra won a guaranteed spot in the Hobby Stock feature at Oskaloosa on August 23-25, but turned it down, because he wasn’t legal to run that race.

So Shelton was given the spot, which he was happy to take. Small held on to finish in 3rd, Jeff Soper was 4th, with Jim Walker coming home in 5th. Mark Holt and Becerra were heat race winners.

Dave Burdette edged out Tyler Schulte at the line to grab the lead on lap 1 of the Hornet feature. Burdette and Schulte would run the next several laps side by side, until Schulte was able to take command of the race on lap 7. Schulte then held off Burdette on the final 3 laps to claim the win. Gordon Blankenship came from 8th to finish in 3rd, Dustin Boling was 4th, with Porter Collins rounding out the top 5. Heat race wins went to Burdette and Blankenship.
