Lady Tigers Defense Rusty After Week of Rain Outs

Wet weather kept the Scotland County softball team off the field most of last week and it showed on Monday when the Lady Tigers traveled to Highland. SCR-I committed six errors that allowed the Cougars to score seven unearned runs en route to a 8-1 victory.

“We over threw first base at least four times and dropped some balls in the outfield,” said Coach Terri Slaughter. “It was just a bad defensive game all around and you are not going to win with defense like that.”

Highland’s hurler Laura Kraft limited the Lady Tigers to just one run on as she scattered seven hits and walked two batters.

SCR-I fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Kim Cottrell walked to lead off the inning. SCR-I hurler Rebecca Consbrock came back to strikeout the next two Highland batters before an outfield error allowed the first run to score.

The Cougars added another unearned run in the third before blowing the game open with a three-run fourth inning. The Cougars had just one base hit and a walk but two SCR-I errors allowed the three runs to cross the plate.

Scotland County tallied its lone run in the sixth inning. With one out Valerie Crawford singled. She scored on a stand-up triple by Jamie Fuller.

Highland tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Consbrock gave up just six hits on the game and walked three while striking out seven batters.

Center fielder Kirsten Johnston went 3-3 at the plate for the Lady Tigers. Ashley Ellison added two singles while Ali Fromm and Crawford collected the other hits.
