Jayvee Football Season Opens With 8-7 Win

For the second straight year the Scotland County junior varsity football game against South Shelby came down to the wire. This year the Tigers avenged an overtime loss in 2003 by scoring in the final two minutes of the September 13 contest to defeat the Cardinals 8-7.

The Tigers offense was able to move the ball most of the game but the South Shelby defense kept SCR-I out of the end zone until the final drive of the game. SCR-I was stopped at the two-yard line to end the first half.

“The game went back and forth all night,” said coach Nathan Pippert. “Both defenses played well and stopped the other team when they had to.”

Scotland County finally got the ball into the end zone with just two minutes remaining in the game. Colby Brown scored on a two-yard run to cut the South Shelby lead to 7-6. The Tigers decided to go for the win and attempt the two-point conversion. Quarterback Bryce Blomme hit Andy Cowell with a three-yard pass on the game winning play to make the score 8-7.

The SCR-I defense made one final stand, keeping South Shelby from scoring in the final two minutes to preserve the victory.

The team’s defensive performance was led by a pair of interceptions by Grant Blomme and Cowell.

“What a good way to open the season,” Pippert stated. “It was a well fought game by both teams.
