Lady Tigers Bring Home Schuyler County Softball Tournament Title

After a pair of heartbreaking losses earlier in the week the Scotland County softball team showed the heart of a champion by rebounding to take the championship of the Schuyler County Tournament September 25th in Queen City.

SCR-I opened with a 3-1 win over Atlanta. Sophomore Karra Small took to the hill for SCR-I and threw a gem. She allowed just five base runners while striking out four.

The Lady Tigers went ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Valerie Crawford had a base hit and stole second and third base before scoring on a groundout by Angie Bulen.

The team broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. The damage came with two outs when Jamie Fuller singled. After Crawford was hit by a pitch Jacqui Drummond delivered a triple to plate both runs.

In game two, SCR-I dispatched with a much-improved Brashear ballclub by a final score of 5-4.

Both teams had the bats working early. Kirsten Johnston, Rebecca Consbrock and Ali Fromm all had hits in the opening frame. Jessica Bair also delivered an RBI hit as the Lady Tigers pulled ahead 3-2.

Pinch runner Kellyn Wickert scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning in a close play at the plate.

Consbrock was the winning pitcher. She allowed eight base runners in the contest but struck out 14 batters for the victory.

The Lady Tigers beat Knox County for the third time this season with a 2-0 victory in the championship game.

As was the case in its earlier wins against the Eagles, SCR-I got to Knox County’s Katie McMahon in the second inning. Valerie Crawford, Jessica Bair and Ashley Ellison all had key hits in the inning. Crawford scored on a squeeze bunt by Johnston.

The early strike was key as McMahon allowed just one base runner after the first inning.

Consbrock made the early lead stand up as she blanked the Eagles. The senior hurler allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out 10.

Ellison helped preserve the shutout when she threw out a runner at the plate in the third inning.
