Memphis UMC Collecting For Tsunami Disaster Relief

The death toll in south Asia is expected to rise to 100,000 following the earthquake and tsunami this past week. In a statement from Bishop Robert Schnase, Bishop of The Missouri Conference of The United Methodist Church, “When we see such profound suffering and loss, our faith invites us to ask, “Is there anything we can do to help?” The United Methodist Church through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), offers excellent means by which we can express our compassion and deep hope for the people whose lives have been changed forever by this disaster. Your prayers are appreciated and your gifts to UMCOR will be used wisely and strategically to make a positive difference. I encourage Missourians to be in prayer with me and to be compassionate and generous in offering their help.”

Here’s how we can help: The Memphis United Methodist Church is collecting donations for the tsunami disaster relief effort. One hundred percent of the moneys given to UMCOR through Memphis UMC will go directly to relief efforts, since local church members have already paid all of the costs for administering this aid through their regular giving. UMCOR is one of the largest and oldest relief organizations in the world.

Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the church office at 220 W. Jefferson, Memphis, MO 63555, telephone 660-465-8935. For more information, call Pastor Terry Lippstreu at 660-465-2082. Checks should be made out to “Memphis UMC” and the memo should say “South Asia Emergency-UMCOR Advance #274305.” Credit card donations may also be made by calling 1-800-554-8583 or at www.methodistrelief.org.
