Fire Destroys Business on Highway 136 in Downing

Three area fire departments battled a blaze Saturday, January 22 that destroyed a business in Downing.

Oldies and Oddities was consumed by the fire that was first reported at approximately 6:15 p.m. The Downing Fire Department responded to the emergency call and quickly sought assistance from the Queen City and Lancaster fire departments to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.

The firemen were on the scene for more than three hours. The Downing Fire Department was called back to the scene the following morning at 4:00 a.m. when the fire rekindled. The volunteers were present for approximately two hours.

The business is owned by Phil Homer. According to the Schuyler County Times, the blaze was reported to have started in a bathroom where an electric heater was in use.
