Mike Stone Named Mayor of Memphis

A month after long-time Memphis Mayor Ron Alexander resigned from his post, the Memphis City Council has appointed his replacement. The council voted 3-0 to name alderman Mike Stone as the city’s new leader.

Stone accepted the position at the April 7th council meeting. “Thank you, and I won’t let you down,” Stone told the capacity crowd at city hall.

The appointment now leaves the city with a vacancy in the east ward alderman seat previously held by Stone. Council members asked interested parties to contact a council member of city hall. The vacancy is expected to be filled at the May meeting.

Both appointments will serve until the next municipal election, in May of 2006.

The April 5th election results were certified at the meeting and aldermen Ron Gardner and Lucas Remley were sworn in for new two-year terms.
