New City Swimming Pool Ready to Make a Splash

The long awaited plunge will be taken right around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 30th. Thatís when the first dive, cannonball or belly flop will hit the water at the new Memphis Municipal Swimming Pool, which will officially open its doors for the first time at the traditional Memorial Day beginning.

Area residents will get a sneak peak at the new facility on Sunday as the city is hosting an open house for viewing of the aquatic center from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Guests will tour the site but the swimming season will not kick off until Memorial Day.

After several years of seeking funding sources for a new pool, the City of Memphis finally received a federal grant back in 2001 for $170,000. The following year the contract was awarded to Sparks Constructors of Kirksville to build the new pool for a cost of $245,000.

Added funding from the city allowed the construction of a new pool house as well as an adjoining kiddie pool. Monroe Construction built the pool house. City crews did the plumbing, installed the lighting, built sidewalks and constructed the wading pool for the kids.

Community donations helped the city purchase equipment and furnishings for the new facility. Alpha Epsilon Sigma, Omicron Theta and Xi Theta Tau sororities made contributions along with donations by Pepsi-Cola, RPM, Walker Motors, Kountry Konnection and Barkerís. These gifts have allowed the city to purchase lounge chairs, a spray fountain, a slide, new signs, a stereo and speakers, and other equipment for the facility.

The new pool will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days a week.

Admission prices have been set at $1.50 for kids ages four to 17; $2 for adults or $2.50 for an adult with a child age three and under. Pool passes are on sale. An adult pass for 20 entries is $35. A child pass for 20 entries will be $20 and the adult w/child pass is $40.

The facility will be booking special pool parties. The cost will be $35 for parties under 25 occupants. The fee is $50 for parties of between 26-50 guests. All party rentals are for two hours.
