Local Relay for Life Set For June 17-18
by Diane Tague
The Scotland County Relay For Life is about to arrive. This is the fifth year for it and it will be held June 17th and 18th on the Memphis square from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
The survivors lap will begin in the evening at 6:30 p.m. Dr. G.L. Collier will once again be our D.J. for the evening. Local entertainment will be provided by Canine Capers 4-H group, Dustin and Stephanie Crump, Melissa Miller and her sisters, Cindy Mannick, Angela Westhoff and Lindsay Jones. They will entertain until the luminary service, which will begin at 9:00 p.m.
Rick Fischer will be the announcer for this very emotional part of the evening. If you wish to purchase a luminary, you can do so by contacting Beverly Moore or any team member. If luminaries are purchased before 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 16th they will be in alphabetical order. Any purchased after that will be placed at the end of the ordered ones.
After the Luminary Service will be the reading of the “Empty Table”. When that ceremony is over the teams will be entertaining the community with their lip sync contest.
We are very pleased to have 10 teams who have worked very hard to raise money for the relay. They will continue to raise money throughout the evening with selling of food and various games of skill. The teams for this y ear consist of The Willy Wonka’s, team captain, Madonna Ward; The Quackers, captain, Leslie Mallett; The Hula Hoopers, captain, Jennifer Alexander; Electric Jello, captain, Karla Matlock; T & T Outfitters, captain, Teresa Lee; No Payne No Gain, captain, Cathy Campbell; Circus Circus, captain, Jenny Aldridge, Mom’s Angels, captain, Mona Beckley; Looney Tunes, captain, Rose Trueblood; and Memphis FFA, captain, Christina Vassholz. All of these teams have been working real hard on this year’s relay and we appreciate all who contributed in any way.
We would like to invite the community to bring a lawn chair and spend the evening with us and learn all about “Why We Relay”. The money raised for the relay goes for education, research and advocacy.
If any one is interested in next year’s relay, whether to be on the committee or to have a team, contact any committee member or a team captain from this year. Committee members are Diane Tague, Phyllis Mallett, Beverly Moore, Leslie Troutman, Kathy Gardner and Chris Tinkle.
We hope everyone will come out to this very special event for a very special cause of fighting cancer.
