Pool Averages 100 Swimmers Per Day in First Season

The hot, dry summer has proven less than productive for farmers, but it worked wonders for the premier season of the new Memphis Municipal Swimming Pool.

According to numbers released by the city, more than 7,000 people utilized the pool in 2005. Kids filled the bulk of the time at the pool, with swimmers between the ages of four to 17 accounting for 5,643 paid entries to the swim center. The little ones were not the only community members to take advantage of the new facility. The pool had 1,041 paid adult entries as well as 454 paid entries for an adult with a child. Overall there were 7,138 paid guests at the pool during the 73 days it was open this summer.

The facility hosted 20 small parties (25 guests or less), eight large parties (up to 50 swimmers) and two special events. The pool also was used to administer Red Cross swim lessons, PACE aquatic exercise classes for arthritis sufferers, and private swimming instruction. New this year were the weekly teen and family nights and a special youth swim meet was hosted.
