Alta Mae Smart, 100, of Memphis, MO, passed away February 24, 2005 at Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

Alta was born December 27, 1904, the daughter of William and Frances Johnson Smith near Gorin, MO.

She graduated from Gorin High School and worked at the Gorin Telephone Office and the Shaeffer Pen Co., in Ft. Madison, IA.

On March 15, 1930 she married Emmett Smart. He worked for Western Union so they traveled extensively before settling down in Chester, IL, in the 1940s. In 1984 they moved to Memphis, MO. Alta was also a member of the Baptist Church.

Alta was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett, who passed away in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ray Smith, and a sister, Ethel Tague.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, Floyd Tague and wife, Gladys of Memphis, MO, Callie Strandberg of Liberal, KS, Dorothy Sequim of Weslaco, TX, and Madeline Riney of Kahoka, MO, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family has suggested memorials to the Gorin Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held February 26, 2005, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Pastor Dan Hite officiating. Musicians were Arleta Dye, organist, and Dorothy Hunolt, soloist. Pallbearers were Kevin Payne, Doug Brown, Gurden Tague, Duane Arnold, Dale Tague, and Gilbert Nichols. Interment was in the Gorin Cemetery, Gorin, MO.
