JACKIE EUGENE SIMERL
(8/28/1940 – 3/14/2005)

Jackie Eugene Simerl, 64, of Memphis, MO, passed away March 14, 2005, at the Scotland County Care Center, Memphis, MO.

The eldest son of Junior Forrest and Marja Mae “Stone” Simerl, he was born August 28, 1940, in Scotland County, MO.

Jack was a 1958 graduate of Downing High School, Downing, MO.

In 1960, he married Levonne Greene, and to this union three children were born, Kathy, Danny and Steve.

Jack made his living as a mechanic for many years and eventually retired due to a disability from the Missouri Department of Transportation. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending auctions, and flea markets. He always loved spending quality time with his family. He adored and loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally. He considered them his greatest accomplishments.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his daughter, Kathy, and husband, Hughie Cline of Memphis, MO; two sons, Danny Simerl of Memphis, MO and Steve Simerl and wife, Lori of Jefferson City, MO; grandchildren include Angel Cline, Todd and Anita Cline, Chris and Sarah Cline, Jeff and Kate Cline, Cory Simerl and his mother, Kimberly Simerl, Stevie Simerl, Colt Simerl, and Case Simerl; great-grandchildren include, Darick and Rebecca Cline, Nova Cline, Hannah, Noah and Maddie Cline; one brother, James Simerl and wife, Virginia of Memphis, MO; twin sisters, Leola Shuck and husband, Richard of Warrenton, MO, and Leota Cundiff of Brashear, MO; 23 nieces and nephews; one uncle, Jeryl Stone and wife, Denise of Memphis, MO; and two aunts, Cecil Snodgrass of Memphis, MO, and Irene Baker of Kansas; and many cousins that were very near and dear to his heart.

Known to his friends as “Big Jack” because of his huge giving heart, his larger than life personality and his friendly giving attitude toward everyone he met. For several years Jack played the part of Santa Claus in the community, a part he portrayed well due to his jolly personality, his round belly and rosy cheeks. He loved children and was known frequently to give free ice cream cones to the little people he met at the Country Inn Café. He enjoyed greeting and visiting with customers, moving from one table to the next at the Country Inn. He was especially proud of the Big Jack burger, his namesake.

Jack will be sadly missed by those who he loved and whom loved him. He was afflicted by a paralyzing illness for the last 12 years. Now in Heaven, he will join the loved ones who passed before him, and join his dearest friends, Catfish John, Butch and Flash. They’ll have lots to talk about and a story or two to tell. Not to mention a good game of cards with his buddies, Wayne, Mike, PeeWee, and Freddy Lee.

The family has suggested memorials to the Scotland County Care Center and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 East Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 17, 2005, from noon until 8:00 p.m. at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Charles Hammack and Bro. Larry Smith officiating. Pallbearers will be Buddy Cundiff, Jerry Scurlock, Larry Simerl, Mike Stone, Terry Simerl, Tim Cundiff, Jared Holt and Don Sides. Interment will be in the Memphis Cemetery.
