ISHMAEL EUGENE SMITH
(12/30/1932 – 7/16/2005)



Ishmael Eugene Smith, 72, of Downing, MO, passed away July 16, 2005, at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

The son of Thomas Henry and Lizzie Ann (VanKeuren) Smith, he was born on December 30, 1932, in Elk Point, SD.

Following graduation from Lancaster High School, he served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Lois Marie Schmitter on January 16, 1955 in Downing, MO at the home of the bride’s parents. To this union two children were born, Dianna and William.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Smith of Downing, MO; two children, Dianna Marie Nelson of Glenwood, MO and William Eugene Smith and wife, Kathy of Downing, MO; three grandchildren, Ella Mae Sadie McCallum and husband, David, Amanda Marie Nelson and Joshua David Smith; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Ashley McCallum and Duncan Hawkee McCallum; one sister, Mildred Lane of Rock Island, IL; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Ishmael was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clifton Smith, Sylvester Smith, Cecil Smith, and Millard Smith; five sisters, Hazel Beerbower, Alice Smith, Merrilla Smith, Merna Ferdig and Una Smith and one nephew.

Ishmael worked for Poe’s Implement in Downing, MO, after returning from the Army. He also worked for the Burlington Railroad, #513 Construction Union and was also a truck driver for the Rock Island Lumber in Rock Island, IL for several years after which he moved back to the Downing area for his retirement.

Memorial services were held at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, MO, July 23, 2005, with Larry Smith, pastor of the Downing Christian Church, Downing, MO, officiating. Music was provided by organist, Betty Anderson. Memorials have been established for the family or to the Downing Fire Department. The body has been cremated and will be interred at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing.
