MARY EVELYN CHILDERS
(2/27/1922 – 12/3/2005)



Mary Evelyn Childers, 83, of Memphis (formerly of Rutledge), MO, died December 3, 2005, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.

The daughter of Edgar Byron and Orilla May (Morgan) Padgett, she was born on February 27, 1922 at Arbela, MO.

On April 23, 1944 at Memphis, MO, she was united in marriage to Jonathan Perry (J.P.) Childers. They lived and farmed near Rutledge, MO, until they moved to Memphis, MO in 1998.

Mrs. Childers was a lifelong resident of Scotland County, MO. She attended Memphis Public Schools and graduated from high school in 1939. She attended Kirksville State Teachers College and graduated in 1970. She played snare drum in college and enjoyed mathematics. She taught elementary school at Fort Donnelson, South Liberty, Rutledge, Wyaconda, and Memphis school districts.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Childers was a member of the Rutledge New Testament Church.

She is survived by her husband, J.P. Childers of Memphis, MO; one son, Jon Childers and wife, Jan of Eagan, MN; one grandson, Jason Meeuwen and wife, Jennifer of Belle Plaine, MN; two great-grandsons, Garrett and Isaac Meeuwen of Belle Plaine, MN; one brother, David R. Padgett and wife, Hazel of Ozark, MO; one sister, Barbara Anita Briggs and husband, Roger of Rushville, IL; one brother-in-law, Joe Neese, Jr. of Rutledge, MO; one sister-in-law, LeGene Padgett of Memphis, MO; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Edgar (Cliff) Padgett; one sister, Jacquelyn Neese; and one niece, Susan Neese.

Funeral services were held December 6, 2005 at the New Testament Church at Rutledge, MO with Reverend Charles Hammack and Reverend Jim Brown officiating. Music was provided by Angela Westhoff. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery at Memphis, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO. Pallbearers were Bob Neese, Sam Padgett, David Padgett, John Tippett, John Cole, and Nathan Briggs.

In memory of Mrs. Mary Evelyn Childers the family has suggested memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Rutledge New Testament Church and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
