Warmer, Dry Winter Leaves Region Ripe For Grass Fires

“Grassfires in January?” that was the question asked by one local fireman as he responded to the department’s second such blaze this winter.

The Scotland County Fire Department responded to a call of a grass fire at the Vernon Oberholtzer property located north of Memphis off of Route CC at 5:09 a.m. on Sunday, January 15th.

Firemen quickly brought the blaze under control after it consumed a few acres of grass and natural cover located just north of the residence. No buildings or other structures were damaged. The department was on the scene for approximately 30 minutes.

Unusually warm weather, combined with windy conditions and low amounts of precipitation have led to the recent outbreak of grass fires. Firemen ask residents to be aware of the conditions and take extra precautions when burning brush or debris.
