Firemenís Basketball Tourney Helps Raise Nearly $4,000 For After-Prom
Traffic on the pagers for the Scotland County Fire Department last week wasnít calls to respond to fires or to rescue victims from accidents. Instead the radio traffic for the 24-member volunteer force instead was focused on set-up times and refereeing schedules for the fourth annual basketball tournament sponsored by the organization.
The event held January 28th at the SCR-I high school and elementary school gyms featured teams of boys and girls from third grade to seventh grade from across northeast Missouri.
Participants and spectators paid a small entry fee that when combined with the sale of concessions throughout the day helped generate nearly $4,000 for the 2006 Scotland County R-I After Prom to be held this May.
The tournament was organized by fireman Randy Trueblood. The department handled the basketball end of the event, and turned over $1,734 in proceeds from the gates to the local after-prom committee.
The remainder of the proceeds came from the concession stands at both buildings, which were run by the after-prom committee. The SCR-I FBLA chapter completed the volunteer labor force, providing scorekeepers and workers to run the time clock and scoreboard in both gyms for the entire day.
