Filing Opens Tuesday For County Offices

Filing for the August 2006 primary election in Scotland County will open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28th in the office of the Scotland County Clerk.

Voters will fill a total of eight county-level offices in November. Candidates have until March 28th to declare for the offices of presiding commissioner, county clerk, county recorder, circuit clerk, county collector, county treasurer, prosecuting attorney and associate circuit judge.

There is a $50 fee to file for the office, with that money earmarked for the candidate’s designated political party.

The county clerk’s office will open early for the first Tuesday and will remain open until 5:00 p.m. The remainder of the filing period will revert to regular hours in the office, which are 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Unlike in years past, when placement on the ballot was established by a first come, first serve basis, the 2006 primary ballots will not require candidates to wait in line overnight in an effort to be at the top of the ballot.

County Clerk Betty Lodewegen stated she will use a lottery, as allowed by the state election code, to establish ballot placement for all names of candidates that file on the first day. After that, candidates will be listed in the order in which they file.
