MoDOT Closes Route H For Bridge Repair
Route H near Arbela in Scotland County is closed to through traffic for repairs to the bridge at North Wyaconda River.
On Tuesday, March 14, the Missouri Department of Transportation closed Route H, about four miles north of Arbela in Scotland County, to repair the bridge over the North Wyaconda River.
The bridge will be closed until mid-April, as crews work to reinforce the steel floor beams to strengthen the bridge.
State bridge inspectors discovered the problem when evaluating the bridge last week.
Carl Callahan, MoDOT’s state bridge maintenance engineer, said his crew witnessed a truck driving over the posted, one-lane bridge and watched as the bridge deck deflected.
“The bridge was already scheduled to receive these repairs this spring,” Callahan said. “But because of the concern about the structural integrity of the floor beams, we recommended immediate closure.”
Motorists are being detoured to Routes 15 and 136.
“We will order materials immediately, but will not be able to begin work on this bridge until emergency repairs that have already been started on another bridge in the area are completed,” Callahan explained. “We have contacted the school district, the county commissioners and the Northeast Regional Planning Commission and have made attempts to notify residents in the area through the media.”
The bridge was built in 1939 and has a wooden deck above the steel beams and below the asphalt. It is not scheduled to be replaced. The repairs are expected to cost several thousand dollars.
