Fair Board Hoping To Put Dent In Light Fund With Demolition Derby Fundraiser

Rarely does it pay to be involved in an auto accident. The Scotland County Fair Board is hoping plenty of folks will pay to see one however, as the organization will host a special Labor Day weekend Demolition Derby at the Scotland County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 2nd.

The Fair Board has joined forces with the Scotland County Fire Department to host the special fundraiser to help bring new lighting to the racetrack at the fairgrounds.

The fair board and track promoter Todd Staley originally announced an aggressive plan for installation of 13 new light poles at the track back in October of 2005. At that time the estimated cost for the project was $50,000, or approximately $4,000 per pole and bank of lights.

Since that time, the track promoters and the fair board have been working to raise the necessary funds for the project.

Organizers of the demolition derby are hoping to put a big dent in that dollar figure for the project. The Labor Day event is boasting a $1,000 top-prize payout, which is sure to draw numerous cars from around the area. Second place will pay $500, with third taking home $250. In addition there will be a $100 hard-hitter prize.

Spectators will get a special add-on with the organizers offering a compact class, with a jackpot payoff to the one winner.

The event will feature the same rules used in the fire departmentís demolition derbies held annually at fair time.

Cars will start checking in at 4:00 p.m. with last call at 6:30 p.m. The green flag will fall on the first heat event at 7:00 p.m.

A rain date was set for Sunday, September 3rd in case of inclement weather.
