October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. It is second only to lung cancer as the most common cause of death among women.

According to the U.S. Cancer Statistics: 2006 Incidence and Mortality report, more than 212,970 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, and more than 40,978 died of the disease.

Early detection and prompt treatment are the key. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread.

Unfortunately many women over the age of 40 do not have regular checkups, tending, instead to wait 4 or 5 years.

It is important to remember that your doctor does not necessarily think you have Breast Cancer if he or she suggests a screening test.

If a screening test result is abnormal, you may need to have more diagnostic testing. Mammograms are the use of X-rays to detect breast changes in women who have no signs or symptoms of Breast Cancer.

Dr. Celeste Miller-Parish in coordination with the SCMH Radiology Department, will provide a FREE Breast Cancer Awareness Screening on Monday, October 16, 2006, at Memphis Medical Services.

Along with the Free Screening Dr. Miller-Parish will provide information on how to perform a self-exam.

Free Gifts will be provided. The SCMH Radiology Department will provide free handouts and information about Breast Screening and special gifts at Memphis Medical Services. Register for Free Door Prizes.
