Iowa Man Takes Own Life During Traffic Stop

A routine traffic stop in Scotland County ended tragically with an Iowa motorist taking his own life.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Stanley Ochs, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17 on Highway 15 south of Memphis near the roadside park.

A Missouri Highway Patrol trooper reported a southbound motorist driving erratically. The northbound trooper, turned around and caught up to the car. When the trooper activated the vehicle’s emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop for an illegal lane change, the suspect vehicle swerved and ran off the right side of the roadway coming to rest in the ditch.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the trooper found the driver to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. A .22 caliber weapon was also identified adjacent to the driver.

Ochs was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident was investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control. The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department, the Scotland County Ambulance Service and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
