ROVENE IRENE THOMAS
(2/5/1923 -3/26/2006)



Rovene Irene Thomas, 83, of Memphis, MO, formerly of Gorin, MO, passed away March 26, 2006, at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

She was born the daughter of Richard and Katie (Cotton) Roberts on February 5, 1923 in Clark County, Missouri.

Rovene graduated from Granger High School. She worked as a postal clerk at Granger before her marriage.

She married G.B. Thomas, Jr., on July 1, 1943 at the Methodist Church in Kahoka. He preceded her in death on June 25, 2003.

To this union was born three children: Shirley, Rodney and Randy. They began farming south of Arbela. The Thomas’ continued to farm after moving to the Gorin area.

Rovene was a member of the Gorin United Methodist Church.

For many years, G.B. and Rovene owned and operated a hardware and feed business in Gorin. They later owned and operated the Farmer’s Tavern Lakes & Campground near Gorin, where Rovene’s cooking was enjoyed by many near and far.

In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening – especially raising flowers. Rovene taught Sunday School at the Gorin United Methodist Church for many years and participated in 4-H with her children.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Shirley Thomas Anderson in 1992; three sisters, Margaret Davis, Mary Coeber, and Dolly Parks; and five brothers, Dean, Rueben, Eddie, George, and Russell Roberts.

She is survived by: two sons, Rodney Thomas and wife Debbie of Gorin, MO, Randy Thomas and fiancée Cathy Brown of Memphis, MO; a son-in-law, Bob Anderson of Knox City, MO; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Roberts of Iowa, Lois Branch and husband Jim of Sterling, IL, and Lela Thomas of Earlville, IA; two brothers-in-law, Jim Thomas of Gorin, MO, and Gary Thomas and Sharon of Liberty, IL; grandchildren, Dale Thomas and wife Pam of Memphis, MO, Gayle Thomas of Pella, IA, Tim Thomas of Oskaloosa, IA, Maranda Ziebarth and husband Shane of Macon, MO, Sandra Swearingen and husband Craig of Memphis, MO, Brooke and Andrea Jenkins of Kahoka, MO; great-grandchildren, Brett, Bradley, Bo and Benner Thomas, Kalissa Thomas, Justin and Landyn Swearingen, Tristen and Bethany Ziebarth, Evin and Aalyhah Edmondson, and Joel Jenkins; a special friend, Dianne Seyb; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services were held March 30, 2006 in the Gorin United Methodist Church in Gorin, MO. Officiating the service were Brother Mark Boley and Pastor Ilene Howell. Special music was provided by Eilene Findley, pianist, and Sandra Swearingen, soloist. Serving as pallbearers were Tim Thomas, Dale Thomas, Ron Roberts, Jack Roberts, Shane Ziebarth, and Craig Swearingen. Honorary bearers were Vera Tague, Dianne Tague, Bill Wiley, Bobby Green, and Randy Mathes. Interment was in the Gorin Cemetery, Gorin, MO.

Memorials have been suggested to the Gorin United Methodist Church, to the Gorin Community Center, or to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice and may be left at or mailed to Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main, Memphis, MO 63555.
