PEARL M. ELLIS
(12/5/1913 - 7/2/2006)

Pearl M. Ellis, 92, of Memphis, passed away July 2, 2006, at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

She was born the daughter of John and Agnes (Stanbaugh) Frew on December 5, 1913 in Canton, IL.

Pearl married James Logan Ellis on July 31, 1934 in Canton. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1988.

Pearl graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb and taught 1-8 grade in Bushnell, Avon, and Industry. She also was employed at Swift Hatchery in Bushnell in 1954 before moving to Memphis.

She worked as a domesticated worker in Memphis in many homes, especially for the Albert Gardner family. She was a very hard worker and loved her family.

“When I first started working at Ben Franklin (in Memphis), Mom would walk to work with me every Saturday so I wouldn’t be alone,” her daughter Shirley recalled. “It was a 9-mile walk from the farm and she walked with me to work and came back when I got off at night.”

Pearl enjoyed embroidery, quilting, and sewing as well as gardening and canning. She especially loved dogs and cats.

She attended the Lutheran Church in Canton and the Presbyterian Church in Memphis.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her children: Shirley Shelley of Memphis, David Ellis of Kirksville, and Jimmy Ellis of Ottumwa; brothers, Arthur Frew of Canton, IL, and Glen and his wife Joann Frew of Iowa; a sister Betty and her husband Ed Corona of Monte Vista, CO; five grandchildren, Rhonda and husband John Shultz of Ottumwa, IA, Kim and husband Mark Heppel of Winter Springs, FL, Rachel and husband William Reckenberg of Memphis, MO, Dawn and husband Steve Allen of Orlando, FL, and Matthew Ellis of Kirksville, MO; 18 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held July 6, at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Pastor Jack Sumption of the First Christian Church officiating. Ron Gardner and her nephews served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Brock Cemetery in northern Scotland County, MO.

Memorials have been suggested to the family and can be left at or mailed to: Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main St., Memphis, MO 63555. Condolences may be sent to the Ellis family via email at gerths@gerths.com.
