Tigers Get Boost Of Confidence With Big Win Over South Shelby

“We just need a win,” was the prophetic comment made by Coach Ryan Bergeson before Tuesday night’s home game versus South Shelby. “Our confidence level is really low right now. I think a win would help us get back on track.”

Considering the Tigers had dropped eight straight games and they were hosting a talented squad from South Shelby that was off to an 8-3 start, the odds were against SCR-I picking up that needed win on Tuesday night.

But the Tigers beat the odds, and they beat the Cardinals, pulling off the 49-37 upset.

Scotland County jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first period as Matt Wickert and Cody Musgrove combined for 13 points in the opening frame.

The Tigers slowed down a little bit offensively in the second period, but the defensive effort remained constant, allowing SCR-I to expand the lead to 28-20 at the break.

South Shelby started the third period with a quick run, but Musgrove stalled the rally with back-to-back hoops. Chris Humes scored six points in the period as the Tigers kept the advantage in double digits. Bryce Blomme drove to the basket and scored an acrobatic shot at the buzzer to make the score 42-32 with just eight minutes left to play.

The Tigers managed just seven points in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals were unable to solve the SCR-I defense. South Shelby was held to just five points in the final period as Scotland County prevailed 49-37.

Scotland County (3-8) got a balanced scoring effort led by Wickert with 14 points. Musgrove and Bryce Blomme each finished with 12 points while Humes contributed with eight points.

South Shelby (8-4) was led by Cody Wise with 12 points.
