Brookfield Spoils Senior Night For Lady Tigers

A roller coaster ride of emotion ended with tears for several of the Scotland County Lady Tigers after Brookfield spoiled the SCR-I senior night with a 54-51 defeat on February 24th in Memphis.

Scotland County opened the game in typical fashion, using its full-court press to fuel an early run. Layups by Ali Fromm, Jamie Fuller and Jessica Bair gave SCR-I a 6-2 lead in the gameís first minute.

After Bair hit a jumper, Fromm connected on a three pointer to make the score 11-6 with 3:12 left in the opening frame. Fromm scored the next 10 points for the Lady Tigers who led 18-14 at the end of one period of play.

Brookfield battled back to tie the game at 21-21 early in the second period. Bair scored on a drive to the bucket and Kirsten Johnston followed with four straight points to put SCR-I on top 27-21. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the first half with the Lady Tigers holding a three-point advantage at half time.

Neither team lit it up in the third period, as more than five minutes ticked off the clock with only three points scored, all by Brookfield, to tie the game at 34-34.

Fromm hit back-to-back shots to return SCR-I to the top at 40-36 before the Bulldogs once again knotted the score with just eight minutes to play.

The Bulldogs opened the fourth period with a 6-0 lead forcing coach Kelli Swearingen to call a time-out with 4:26 left to play.

The stoppage didnít slow Brookfield down as the visitors led 48-41 with only 2:48 left on the clock.

But a three-point play by Ashlee Frederick got the crowd back into the game. After a defensive stop, the Lady Tigers pulled to within two on a bucket by Fromm. The seniors wouldnít go easily. Jamie Fuller scored inside on a nice pass by Frederick to tie the game at 48-48 with 1:09 remaining on the clock.

The Bulldogs came right back and pulled ahead 50-48.

Just four nights after hitting a buzzer beater to best Schuyler County, Fromm provided more heroics as she converted a three point play to once again put her team on top 51-50.

Brookfield would not go away. Brittany Harrington answered Frommís score with a jumper from the baseline with just 12.4 ticks left on the clock.

SCR-I missed on its next possession and had to foul the Bulldogs to stop the clock. Brookfield took advantage of a lane violation and a controversial jump ball call on a rebound to erase misses on the front end of two free-throw attempts. The third time was the charm as Harrington sank two from the charity stripe to make the score 54-51 with 8.2 seconds left to play.

After advancing the ball to the front court, the Lady Tigers got a time-out with 3.7 seconds left for one final shot. But there would be no happy ending as the buzzer sounded before Fromm could get off her three-point attempt.

Brookfield (13-12, 6-1) escaped with the win and secured second place in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

Fromm gave the home crowd one last show as she poured in 29 points in her finale. Fuller and Bair each added six points for Scotland County (15-8, 5-2).
