Tigers Capture School’s First Ever Conference Golf Title

The Scotland County golf team made history on May 2 at Milan. The five-member varsity squad won the Tri-Rivers Conference golf tourney to give the program its first ever conference championship in the sport.

The Tigers finished the 18-hole event with a team score of 311. That was 15 strokes better than runner-up Brookfield, which shot a 326. The victory ended a four-year strangle hold that Brookfield had held on the conference golf championship. Schuyler County finished third in the conference with a score of 329.

Milan’s Andy Herington was the tourney medalist as he shot a 71 on his home course. Scotland County’s Matt Wickert was second in individual scoring with a round of 74. Marcus Shalley finished third in the event with a 77. Both SCR-I golfers were honored as first-team all-conference selections.

But the SCR-I domination didn’t end there. The Tigers three remaining golfers all finished in the top 10 among the 70 league golfers. Zach McBee had the sixth best score with a 79 while Joe Spurgeon and Kyle Lister shot rounds of 81 to finish eighth and ninth respectively. All three golfers earned second-team all-conference honors.

“This was by far our best performance of the season,” said first-year coach Jason Hannam. “This was one of our goals this year. Now we need one more great performance this week for a district title.”
