Timber Ridge Golfers Capture Fabius Cup
What the United States golfers could not do on a national level, Scotland County players did at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Memphis on Sunday morning.
The home golfers picked up a 29-15 victory in the Fabius Cup, a tournament based on the international Ryder Cup contest that pits the best golfers in America versus Europe’s top performers. The local event pits Scotland County golfers versus Schuyler County golfers in a pride match between the neighboring country clubs.
The opening round saw the two squads divide into twosomes to play a nine-hole round under the alternate shot format. Scotland County won seven of the 11 matches with one tie to take a 7.5 to 3.5 advantage.
Round two saw new two-player teams formed for a best ball format for the second nine holes of golf. Scotland County won eight of the 11 matches to take a commanding 15.5 to 6.5 lead.
The final round saw 22 head-to-head single matches as the golfers completed the day with the final nine-hole competition. Scotland County golfers won 12 of 22 matches and tied in three others to win 13.5 points to 8.5 for Schuyler County to produce the final margin of victory at 29-15.
The Fabius Cup will reside at Memphis until the 2007 match, which will be played at the Lancaster County Club, resolves the annual event.
