Green City Star Takes ‘Ayer’ Out of Tigers Title Hopes

Green City’s standout Matt Ayers poured in 40 points, including a jumper over a double team as time expired in regulation to force overtime. Ayers then scored five points in overtime to send the Hornets to a 79-75 victory over the Tigers in the second round of the Novinger Tournament on December 1st.

Scotland County jumped out to a 16-11 first period lead despite playing without starter Travis Trueblood who is out indefinitely after separating his shoulder in practice earlier in the week. Grant Blomme hit a pair of three pointers in the opening minutes to start things rolling for SCR-I.

Cody Musgrove shouldered the scoring load in the second period as he scored eight points to help extend the margin to 32-26 at the intermission.

A third scoring option surfaced in the third period as Matt Wickert scored seven of his team’s 15 points in the third period to push the lead to 47-38.

But mounting foul trouble for Scotland County allowed Green City to battle back in the fourth quarter. Ayers scored 12 points down the stretch as the Hornets erased an 11-point deficit to force overtime.

By the end of the extended period, SCR-I lost Wickert, Grant Blomme and Musgrove, all fouling out.

Bryce Blomme scored seven points in overtime to keep SCR-I close but Green City put the game away at the free-throw line to erase a 73-72 SCR-I lead in the final minute of the game.

Musgrove finished with 22 points to pace Scotland County. Bryce Blomme had 18 points while Grant Blomme finished with 14 points. Wickert also reached double figures with 12 points.

Ayers led all scorers with 40 points. Jeremiah Tarver added 8 points to help Green City (2-0) advance to the tourney title game against LaPlata. The loss dropped SCR-I (1-1) into the third place game against Brashear.
