Novinger Upsets Lady Tigers In Tourney Semifinals
It wasn’t the infamous Bat Cave, just the basketball gym at Novinger High School. But a winged mammal made an appearance on December 1st at the high school basketball tourney making it seem as if the the Scotland County Lady Tigers were taking on the caped crusaders.
It wasn’t Batman and Robin but a pair of heroes did help the home team upset the second seeded SCR-I in the semifinals. Katelyn Brawner and Anna Grgurich combined to score 52 of the home team’s 60 points to knock off SCR-I 60-41.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first period as Jessica Bair scored eight points in the opening eight minutes to help Scotland County build an 18-13 lead.
Brawner poured in 10 points in the second quarter, single handedly doubling the entire Scotland County scoring output as the Lady Wildcats pulled ahead 28-23 at the break.
The third period was much of the same as Scotland County struggled to put points on the board. Grugerich hit three three pointers to fuel a 17-6 run for Novinger as the Lady Wildcats’ lead bulged to 45-29.
Brawner finished off a stellar evening with eight fourth-quarter points to end any hope of an SCR-I rally. Novinger outscored the Lady Tigers 15-12 in the final eight minutes to secure the 60-41 victory.
Bair led Scotland County with 12 points. Kirsten Johnston was held to eight points while Deidra Dochterman finished with seven.
Scotland County (1-2) dropped into the third place game with a matchup versus Brashear. Novinger (2-0) advanced to the championship game to take on Green City.
