James Parker Appointed East Ward Alderman

Voters as well as the civil servant himself will get a 10-month test drive following the appointment of James Parker as the new East Ward Alderman for the City of Memphis.

Parker was appointed to the position by Mayor Roger Gosney and affirmed by a 3-0 vote of the city council. He will fill the remainder of the two-year term of Brian Brush who resigned his post after taking a job that has him serving in Iraq.

Parker, who had previously sought the position, indicated he planned to seek election in April 2008 but was looking forward to serving the community and using the shortened term to get acclimated to city business.

Former East Ward Alderman Ron Gardner was present at the June 7th meeting and indicated his willingness to fill the vacancy as did fellow east ward resident Robert Parrish.

All three candidates addressed the council briefly before Gosney made the appointment.

Parker was sworn in to office and took part in the remainder of the agenda items for the June meeting.
