Motorists ‘Lucky’ to Escape Car Accident Unharmed

The word lucky, usually isn’t the first thing to come to the mind of someone just involved in a traffic accident, but it was the description of choice for the vast majority of emergency service personnel that responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 136 just east of Memphis.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 7:35 a.m. on Thursday, August 16 just east of the entrance to the Memphis Cemetery.

Terri Bulen, 44, of Arbela was westbound on Highway 136 in a 2002 Dodge Stratus. She apparently lost control of the vehicle on the rain-soaked road. The car was believed to have hydroplaned, crossing the center line where it struck an eastbound 1989 Dodge pickup driven by 19-year-old Chris Humes of Wyaconda nearly head-on.

An unidentified tractor-trailer that came upon the scene narrowly missed impacting the wrecked vehicles. The driver went off the roadway and was able to return to the highway without losing control of the truck or overturning the grain trailer.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, with the impact tearing the front axle out from underneath the Dodge truck driven by Humes. Miraculously neither driver was injured in the crash.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department, the Memphis Police Department, Scotland County Fire & Rescue and the Scotland County Ambulance Service.

Traffic was temporarily halted on Highway 136 until the wreckage was cleared.
