VESTA JEWELL LEWIS

Vesta Jewell Lewis, 90, of Lancaster, MO, passed away at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO, on January 28, 2007.

The daughter of William Thornton and Nellie Bon (Bruner) Spees, Jewell was born on May 8, 1916, in rural Downing, MO.

On July 5, 1933 in Kirksville, MO she was united in marriage to Berl Rufus Lewis and to this union five children were born, Vena Lou, Velma, Charles, Berneta, and Berl Junior.

Survivors include her children, Vena Lou Tallman of Lancaster, MO, Velma Layman of Keokuk, IA, Charles Lewis of Glenwood, MO, Berneta Lewis of Lancaster, MO, and Berl Junior Lewis and special companion, Patricia Pickering of Livonia, MO; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ona Lee Spees of Kahoka, MO, and Richard Spees and wife, Thelma of Keokuk, IA, and many good friends and neighbors.

Jewell is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Berl Rufus Lewis; one brother, Russell Spees and wife, Betty; and one sister in infancy, Estella Kathleen Spees.

Jewell was a faithful member of the Lancaster Baptist Church of Lancaster, MO, as long as her health permitted.

Funeral services were held on January 31, 2007, at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO with Robert Harrison, pastor of the Lancaster Baptist Church assisted by Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Lancaster United Methodist Church officiating. Music was CD selections. Pallbearers were grandsons. Memorials have been established for the Lancaster Baptist Church or to the Schuyler County Nutrition Site. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery of Downing, MO. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, MO.
