MELINDA DARLENE MASDEN
(1/21/1959 – 7/13/2007)



Melinda Darlene Masden died suddenly on July 13, 2007, at Scotland County Memorial Hospital, Memphis, MO.

Melinda was born January 21, 1959 to Orville and Johanna Peterson Steele in Kirksville, MO.

She married her high school sweetheart Mark Masden August 19, 1978 in the Gorin United Methodist Church.

She was a wonderful wife, loving mother, caring daughter, great sister, and a terrific aunt. Melinda’s greatest passions in life were her family and education. Melinda loved children – her own three sons, her many nieces and nephews and all of her students. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, co-workers, and students.

Melinda graduated from Gorin High School in 1977. She worked as a legal secretary in Memphis from 1979 to 1993. She then opened her own child care business and began her career caring for children. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Buena Vista University in 2000. In 2005 Melinda graduated from the University of Missouri – St. Louis with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She was a teacher at the Gorin Elementary School from 2000 to the present.

Melinda was a lifelong resident of Scotland County. She was a member of the Gorin Methodist Church since childhood. Melinda loved to read, play games, and do many craft activities. Melinda was a fabulous cook and baker – with many family and friends favorites. Her best recipes included sugar cookies, homemade noodles and many fancy birthday cakes. Her favorite teams to cheer for and watch play were the Scotland County Tigers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Melinda is survived by her husband of 28 years, Mark Masden; three sons, Brett and his wife, Michele of Memphis, MO, Eric and William of the home; her parents, Orville and Johanna Steele of Gorin, MO; three sisters, Candee and Stuart Musgrove of Quincy, IL, Janene and Shawn McNamar, Teresa and Lonny Sears, all of Memphis, MO, and a brother, Jon Steele of Gorin, MO; Additional survivors include three brothers-in-law, Peggy Lee and Diane Masden of Severna Park, MD, Terry and Cinda James, and Junior and Pam Masden, all of Kahoka, MO; two sisters-in-law, Alberta and Larry McNamar of Memphis, MO, Carolyn and James Elveston of Natchez, MI; and 27 nieces and nephews; 35 great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding Melinda in death were her grandparents, Bill and AnnaBelle Peterson and Joseph and Sylva Steele. She was also preceded by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Perry and Maxine Masden; two nephews, David and Joshua McNamar; and one great-nephew, Ryan McNamar.

Memorial donations may be made to the Masden Children Educational Fund and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held July 17, 2007, at the Gorin United Methodist Church, Gorin, MO, with Pastor Barb Hagerla officiating. Musicians were organist, Kathy Campbell, and soloist, LaMayra Brown. Pallbearers were Sabe Sears, Doug James, Dennis McNamar, Tyler Henstorf, Andrew Musgrove, and Shannan McNamar. Interment was in the Gorin Cemetery, Gorin, MO. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
