MARY EVELYN NEWLAND
(6/20/1927 – 9/17/2007)
Mary Evelyn Newland, daughter of Leo R. and Hettie E. (Spees) Scott, was born in Philadelphia, MO, on June 20, 1927 and died on September 17, 2007, in Columbia, MO, at the age of 80.
Mary was united in marriage to Daniel Franklin Newland on October 20, 1946, in Lancaster, MO.
Surviving are four daughters, Shirley Capps and husband, Kline of Storm Lake, IA, Wanda Holderman and husband, Tom of Overland Park, KS, Anita Newland of Sedalia, MO, and Teresa Newland of Downing, MO; one son, J.L. Newland and wife, Brenda of Downing, MO; seven grandchildren, Hillary Hopkins, Jordan Newland, Brant Keltner, Tony Capps, Jeff Capps, Kelly Capps and Cory Capps; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Madalene Becraft of Columbia, TN, and Norma Buchanan of Colona, IL; and one brother, Lewis Horn of Bullhead City, AZ.
May was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Hettie; step-mother, Edith Ross; her husband, Daniel; and one brother, Elzia Scott.
After her marriage, Mary spent her life on a farm in the Downing, MO vicinity. Mary also was a cook at the Schuyler R-I School in Queen City, MO, for a number of years.
As wife, mother and homemaker, she loved her family and grandchildren and received great enjoyment from them. Mary enjoyed country living, gardening, sewing, quilting and social activities. Her family remembers her as generous, hardworking, persistent and independent. Her family and many friends will miss her deeply.
Mary enjoyed her church and church family. She was a member of the Grace Community Bible Church in Kirksville, MO, and also attended the Downing Christian Church in Downing, MO.
Funeral services were held September 22, 2007, at the Downing Christian Church in Downing, MO. Bob Shaffer, pastor of the Grace Community Bible Church in Kirksville, MO, officiated and was assisted by Larry Smith, pastor of the Downing Christian Church in Downing, MO. Music was provided by organist, Betty Anderson and soloist, Steve Jorden accompanied by Patty Jorden. Pallbearers were Donnie McElroy, Rick Kaiser, Tommy Baxter, Terry Wheeler, John Lutz, and David Small. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler County Nutrition Site and Downing Cemetery. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery in Downing, MO. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
