MELVIN W. MARTIN
(4/3/1951 - 9/23/2007)



Melvin W. Martin, 56, of Rutledge, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2007, at his residence in Rutledge, Missouri.

Mel was born on April 3, 1951, in Lititz, Pennsylvania, the son of Howard H. and Emma N. Weaver Martin.

On June 17, 1972, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Mel married Dorothy Jane Martin and two years later moved to Missouri.

Mel and Jane farmed for 12 years north of LaBelle, Missouri before moving to Rutledge, Missouri to open Mel’s Garage and continued to operate the garage until his struggle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) forced his retirement.

Mel is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Jane” Martin of Rutledge, Missouri; a son, Sanford and his wife Christine Martin of Rutledge, Missouri; a daughter, Martha Rose and her husband Lewis Martin of Memphis, Missouri; three brothers, Howard Jr. and his wife Erla Martin of Lititz, Pennsylvania, Henry and his wife Margaret Martin of Lititz, Pennsylvania and Michael and his wife Vanita Martin of Bernville, Pennsylvania; three sisters, Anna and her husband Elmer Wenger of Manheim, Pennsylvania, Mabel and her husband Allen Hoover of Port Byron, New York, and Grace and her husband Amos Horst of Edina, Missouri; four grandchildren, Melea and Trent Martin and Christopher and Colin Martin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Martha, wife of Aaron Zimmerman.

Funeral services were held September 27, 2007 at the Millport Mennonite Church southwest of Rutledge, Missouri. A family service was held that morning at the Hillcrest Mennonite Community Center south of Memphis, Missouri.

Luke Fox, Earl Oberholtzer, Carl Hoover and Abner Oberholtzer officiated the services and burial was in the Millport Mennonite Cemetery southwest of Rutledge, Missouri.

Casket Bearers were three brothers - Howard Martin, Jr., Henry Martin, and Michael Martin; and three nephews – Lee Wenger, Ernest Hoover, and Sam Horst.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.
