LOIS DARLENE BROOKS CARTER
(2/9/1932 - 12/12/2007)



Lois Darlene Brooks Carter, 75, of Memphis, MO, passed away December 12, 2007, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

The daughter of Mary Katherine Hocraffer and Henry Clay Brooks, Lois was born February 9, 1932, in Alexandria, MO, the youngest of seven children.

She grew up in Alexandria, MO, until the 1940 Flood when the family moved to Keokuk, IA.

Lois met Garland Carter at a Keokuk dance in 1952. They were married November 22, 1952.

Garland was drafted into the service with the army and was stationed at Fort Hood, TX. Their son, Stanley Carter was born in Killeen, TX in 1954. When Garland was discharged from the Army, Lois and Garland moved to Fort Wayne, IN, where their son, Clayton was born in 1957. They moved back to Garland’s family farm in 1959. In 1962 in addition to farming, Lois and Garland opened their Antique business and operated it until 2005.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Garland, parents, five brothers, Floyd, Marion, Harold, Leo and George, and one sister, Beulah Brooks Ferguson.

Lois is survived by two sons, Stanley Carter and his wife, Jamie of Memphis, MO and Clayton Carter and his wife, Julia of Bedford, TX; her three grandchildren, Beau and Amanda Carter of Bedford, TX and Randie Carter of Memphis, MO, along with nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Memorials suggested to Scotland County Care Center or The American Heart Association and can be left at or mailed to Payne Funeral Home, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held on December 17, 2007, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Payton Murl (Sonny) Smyser, officiating. Pallbearers were Jerry Grubb, Richard Briggs, Brian Briggs, Randy Harrison, David Wiggins, and Larry Wiggins. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Walker, Lynn Monroe and Joe Tom Walker. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
