State-Ranked Lady Birds Extend SCR-I Losing Streak
When a team is trying to end a four-game losing skid, it doesnít help to look at the schedule and find the next contest versus a top-ranked team.
That was the dilema faced by Scotland County. The Lady Tigers, in the midst of a four-game losing streak, saw that mark slide one game further after a 46-20 defeat at the hands of South Shelby, the #3 ranked team in Missouri Class 3.
The Lady Birds clamped down on SCR-Iís leading scorer Kirsten Johnston. The junior scored just two points thanks to the South Shelby defenders.
SCR-I matched the defensive efforts early on. Melissa Cotton hit the lone field goal of the opening eight minutes for Scotland County. But a solid defensive effort held the Lady Birds to just a 7-3 advantage.
That changed in the second quarter as South Shelby blew the game open with a 25-6 run.
It did not get any better for the Lady Tigers after halftime. Johnston scored the lone two points of the third period as South Shelby extended the lead to 42-11.
Jessica Bair scored all of her team-high nine points in the fourth period as the Lady Birds rolled to the 46-20 victory.
Nine different Lady Birds scored in a balanced attack for the state-ranked squad that saw no player in double figures.
