Musgrove Fuels Balanced Attack To Topple Raiders

Just two nights after battling foul trouble that kept him out of much of his teamís tournament opener, junior Cody Musgrove looked like a man on a mission Friday night in the semifinals of the North Shelby Tourney.

Musgrove and Matt Wickert went to work early on the host team as the duo combined for 12 first quarter points as the two teams played to a 14-14 tie in the first eight minutes.

Bryce Blomme nailed a pair of three pointers to start the second period and Grant Blomme followed that up with a three-point play to build a 23-17 advantage and force a North Shelby time-out with 6:20 to play in the second period.

Musgrove scored the next six points for Scotland County as the Tigers looked poised to blow the game open, leading 35-26.

But SCR-I got into foul trouble late in the first half with Matt Wickert and Kyle Shelley both picking up three fouls. Musgrove also went to the bench late after picking up his second foul.

North Shelby took advantage of the break, finishing the first half on an 8-0 run to pull within 35-34 at the intermission.

But Scotland County blew the game open in the third period. The teamís trademark swarming defense stymied North Shelby and allowed SCR-I to open the third period on a 10-0 run.

A three pointer by Bryce Blomme made the score 44-34 with 4:49 to go in the period, forcing another North Shelby time-out.

This time the stoppage didnít work as the Tigers rolled on to the 52-38 lead with just eight minutes to play.

Wickert scored seven quick points to start the fourth period and Scotland County built a 20-point bulge en route to the 72-55 victory.

Musgrove led Scotland County (6-7) with 22 points to lead the Tigers into the tournament title game. Wickert and Grant Blomme both added 13 points. Bryce Blomme had 11 points and Kyle Shelley added seven to a balanced scoring attack.
