Rivalry Intensifies As LaPlata Rallies to Beat Tigers in Tournament Finals

Three pointers were falling from the sky and so too were whistles from the referees as Scotland County could not escape either obstacle in the championship game of the North Shelby Tournament on February 10th.

Undefeated LaPlata, ranked second in Missouri Class 1, rode hot shooting from behind the arc and took advantage of foul trouble for SCR-I to rally from a halftime deficit to knock off the Tigers 72-60.

The Bulldogs hit seven three-pointers in the first period to jump out to a 25-9 lead. But SCR-I scored the final eight points of the opening period to pull within 25-17 as Cody Musgrove scored eight points in the opening eight minutes.

Bryce Blomme took charge in the second period as he scored 11 points to help lead a 25-15 run that saw SCR-I pull ahead 42-40.

The heated rivalry between the two teams nearly boiled over after Musgrove took a hard foul on Matt Fouch as he drove to the lane. The Bulldog’s twin brother, David Fouch took exception to the play and went after Musgrove. He was quickly given a technical foul, but tempers remained high as the LaPlata coach Dave Fouch easily could have been assessed a technical foul as could have Matt Fouch who continued to engage Musgrove after the initial incident.

The whistles seemed to go against Scotland County after the melee. Both Musgrove and Bryce Blomme fouled out early in the fourth period. The Tigers were already playing with a short bench due to a junior varsity tournament, and the disqualifications left the Tigers with just five players on the court, four of which ended the contest with four fouls.

LaPlata took charge of the game in the third period. J Smith hit four three pointers as the Bulldogs outscored SCR-I 18-9 to pull ahead 58-51.

The Bulldogs made 11 of 15 free throws in the final eight minutes to hang on for the 72-60 win. The two squads combined to commit 42 personal fouls and to shoot 50 free throws.

Musgrove led Scotland County (10-8) with 17 points. Bryce Blomme finished with 15 points while Matt Wickert (13 points) and Grant Blomme (11 points) gave the team four players in double figures.

Smith led LaPlata (21-0) with 23 points. David Fouch added 15 points and Matt Fouch finished with 11.
