Lady Tigers’ Dominating Defense Dooms Knox County in 47-26 Win

A varsity high school basketball game is 32 minutes long, but it took less than eight minutes to settle Friday night’s ball game between Scotland County and Knox County.

The Lady Tigers silenced the Courtwarming crowd on hand in Edina as SCR-I jumped out to an 18-1 lead in the first period of the Tri-Rivers Conference tilt.

Kirsten Johnston poured in nine points early on to fuel a solid offensive performance, but it was the Lady Tigers’ stifling defense that secured the win in the game’s opening moments.

Knox County’s lone tally of the period came from the free throw line with 1:45 left on the clock.

SCR-I slowed down a bit on offense in the second period. Deidra Dochterman hit her second three pointer of the game but the only other points came on a bucket from Melissa Cotton and a pair of free throws from Kaitlin Caldwell.

Knox County scored the last eight points of the first half to offer a little hope for the home crowd, down 25-11 at intermission.

The two teams traded spurts in the third period. Knox County pulled to within 25-16 before Cheyenne Ward ended the run with a three pointer. Jessica Bair hit a couple free throws and Cotton scored on a drive to the hoop to make it 35-22 to close the period.

Bair had five points and Caldwell added four down the stretch in the fourth period as SCR-I rolled to the 47-26 victory.

Johnston led Scotland County with 15 points. Bair finished with 11 and both Dochterman and Caldwell pitched in with six points.
