Poe Powers Rams Past SCR-I In Tournament Championship

One player does not a team make, but return a league MVP candidate to a young team that has been without her all year, and you have the intriguing Schuyler County Rams.

Scotland County witnessed first hand the return of all-conference guard Tawnee Poe for the Rams. SCR-I dispatched Schuyler County earlier in the year as the key guard watched from the sidelines while recovering from knee surgery this summer.

Saturday afternoon, Poe showed the Lady Tigers that she was fully recovered. She led Schuyler County to a 62-46 victory in the championship game of the North Shelby Tournament.

The Lady Tigers came out of the gate slowly, managing just seven points in the first period. That allowed the Rams to run out to a 14-7 advantage.

The deficit grew to 27-16 at halftime as Poe matched the Lady Tigers’ second quarter scoring output single handedly.

Scotland County came to life in the third period as Kirsten Johnston scored 10 points to help the Lady Tigers pull to within 39-30.

But Poe would not let her team falter. She scored 12 of her game-high 24 points down the stretch to preserve the 62-46 win for Schuyler County.

Johnston led Scotland County with 22 points. Deidra Dochterman added 13 points.
