Five Scotland County Track Athletes Headed To State

Five Scotland County R-I track athletes have advanced to the state tournament to be held May 18th and 19th in Jefferson City.

The runners advanced to state by placing in the top spots of the Class Sectional races held at Centralia High School on May 12th. The four sectionals across the state narrowed the field to 16 qualifiers for the state championships.

Kirsten Johnston will be representing the Lady Tigers track team. She qualified in the 800-meter run, shaving nearly six seconds off her personal best time to cross the finish line in 2:27.

The boys track team will send the 4x400-meter relay team of Bryce Blomme, Grant Blomme, Joe Spurgeon and Trey Crow on to state. The team also set a personal best for the year at sectionals, completing the event in 3:37, nine seconds better than any other performance in 2007.

Johnston will take the track in Jefferson City on Saturday, May 19th. The race is set for 2:55 p.m.

The boys’ relay team will have to race in a preliminary round on Friday, May 18th at 6:30 p.m. to try to qualify for the finals, which are set for Saturday at 4:10 p.m.
