Tourney Title Hopes Elude Lady Tigers Thanks to Pair of 4-3 Losses

It must have seemed like déjà vu for fans of the Scotland County softball team. For the second time in just hours, the Lady Tigers saw an early lead disappear in their opponent’s final at bat when Canton rallied for a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the second inning in round two of the Knox county Tournament in Edina on Saturday, August 30th.

Scotland County jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Kirsten Johnston started the game with a base hit. She scored when Tara Matlock dropped down a sacrifice bunt that the Canton third baseman threw past first base. Matlock ended up on third base courtesy of the error. Matlock scored on a ground out by Kelly Lister to make it 2-0.

Canton trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second frame. An error opened the door for the rally, but SCR-I kept the damage to a minimum, throwing out one runner at the plate.

Danielle Caldwell tied the contest in the third inning when she crushed a home run to left field.

The Lady Tigers regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Valerie Oldham reached on an error. She went to third on a base hit by Johnston. With two outs, Lister delivered a base hit to leftfield that scored Oldham. Johnston was tagged out trying to score on a wild pitch to end the inning.

Canton tied the game in the sixth inning. The rally got started on a pop fly to shallow right field that was misplayed by the Lady Tigers. That runner scored after a ground out, when a throw home got away from the SCR-I catcher.

Canton won the contest in the bottom of the seventh when Caldwell doubled to left field on a ball that was misjudged by the fielder. She went to third on a throwing error on the play. The winning run scored on a ground out.

Lister took the loss despite allowing just five hits. She didn’t walk a batter. She also went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Johnston was 2-4 with a run scored.

The loss followed a similar 4-3 defeat in the tourney opener as Highland rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win the game in extra innings.

SCR-I went ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Johnston and Matlock started the game with base hits. Deidra Dochterman tripled to drive in both runners. She then scored on a ground out by Lister.

But the Scotland County bats went silent the remainder of the contest and Highland took advantage of several miscues on defense by the Lady Tigers to rally for the victory.
